Aedyn (Eagle-kin)

AX.GAN.06.01 - Lineage: Aedyn

(Eagle-kin)

Setting Fiction

The Aedyn soar above the world's high places, the granite spires, the windswept ridgelines, the cloud-crowned peaks where the air tastes of iron and cold. They are among the eldest of the sentient peoples, shaped by the same residual magic that animated all the first cultures, but the Aedyn believe themselves to have received something extra: the sky itself as inheritance.

Aedyn society is built around the concept of veyrak, a word that translates imperfectly as "the view from above," but carries deeper meaning: the ability to hold the whole before attending to the part. Their leaders are called Highwatchers, chosen not by birth or strength but by demonstrated breadth of perspective, those who can see farthest, literally and figuratively. Councils of Highwatchers govern from open-air platforms called Windseats, where the wind is believed to carry the voices of all who cannot attend.

Their culture prizes observation, patience, and decisive action when the moment arrives. Aedyn do not believe in wasted motion. They study a situation from above, sometimes for days, before committing. When they do commit, it is total.

Aedyn make their homes in eyrie-cities: vast architectural complexes anchored to cliff faces and mountain peaks, connected by rope bridges and thermal lift shafts rather than stairs. Their craftsmanship is exceptional in worked metal and woven textiles, materials that survive high-altitude winds. Trade goods that travel far from Aedyn settlements are prized for their durability.

They are not cold people, but they are deliberate. An Aedyn who calls you friend has watched you long enough to be certain. That friendship endures like stone.

Adventure Hook: The eldest Highwatcher of a mountain eyrie-city has not emerged from her chamber in nine days. Her council says she is meditating. Her apprentice says she never returned from a night flight. The sealed chamber door suggests a third possibility.

Mechanical Profile

Health Modifier

+1

Aedyn build is lean and hollow-boned, optimized for flight rather than absorption of punishment. Their resilience comes from their reflexes and altitude sense, not raw durability.

Cultural Talent

Attunement 1D (free, does not come from Talent budget)

Aedyn culture cultivates deep reading of wind, weather, and the emotional currents of a situation. From early youth, they are taught to sense what lies beneath the surface, the thermal rising before the storm, the tension in a held shoulder, the wrong shape in a distant tree line.

Common Foci for Aedyn: Threat Sense, Spiritual Awareness, Meditation.

Inherited Perks

Keen Eyes | Sensory Enhancement

Effect: Low-Light Vision, the Aedyn ignores Disadvantage on all
visual tasks in dim conditions. In full darkness, they are
        still limited to human-equivalent sight.
In bright daylight or at long range, add +2D to all
Notice rolls relying on sight (scouting, spotting movement,
        reading expressions at distance).
Activation: Passive
Scope: Self
Genre Note: Represents the eagle's legendary visual acuity and
dynamic range. The distance bonus applies only when
the character has space to use it, not in enclosed
            tunnels or dense undergrowth.

Aedyn Flight | Movement

Effect: The Aedyn can fly at full movement speed. Activating
flight from a standing position is a Minor Action.
Aedyn cannot fly while wearing Medium or Heavy armor
, the weight and restriction prevent the necessary
        wingspan movement.
While airborne, the Aedyn ignores ground-based difficult
terrain and can move through spaces that require vertical
access. They cannot hover; they must keep moving or land.
Activation: Minor Action
Scope: Self
Recovery: N/A (sustained)
Genre Note: Flight is a defining trait of the Aedyn and should
be treated as such. GMs should create encounters with
meaningful aerial dimensions when Aedyn are present.
Enclosed environments are a genuine limitation.

Thermal Read | Environmental Adaptation

Effect: Aedyn instinctively read air currents, weather, and
atmospheric conditions. They always know the cardinal
directions while outdoors and cannot become lost in open
terrain. They receive advance warning of significant
weather changes (storms, temperature drops) by up to one
hour before other characters notice. Add +1D to any
        Survival-focused Endurance roll made outdoors.
Activation: Passive
Scope: Self
Genre Note: This perk reflects both physical sense and culturally
trained perception. It functions in any open-air
            environment, including at sea.

Statistic Cap Notes

No statistic cap increases. Aedyn standard caps apply (Attributes max 5D; Talents max 5D).

Power Access

Aedyn have no inherent access to Odd Talent traditions through Lineage alone. Individual Professions may grant access as normal.

Roleplaying Notes

Aedyn tend to position themselves where they can see the room, near windows, on elevated seats, with their back to the wall. They are rarely the first to speak in a group but often the most precise when they do. They find enclosed underground spaces physically uncomfortable and emotionally claustrophobic. Many Aedyn develop rich inner lives during long solo flights, they are prone to extended metaphor and poetic framing when discussing complex matters.

Common Aedyn Names: Verath, Kael, Suvira, Thornwing, Aelys, Dreynak, Isova, Corrath.
